CNIPA Published Summary Statistical Data on Intellectual Property for the First Half of 2020 (2020-7)


China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) published its semi-annual statistical data on patents, trademarks, geographical indications and layout-designs of integrated circuits (layout designs) on July 9, 2020.

As shown, during the first half of 2020, 2.284 million applications of inventions, utility models and designs were filed in China, among which 2.195 million were domestic patent applications and 89,000 were foreign patent applications. 683,000 patent invention applications were filed and 217,000 patent inventions were granted, of which 176,000 domestic patent inventions. Among the granted domestic patent inventions, 169,000 were service inventions, constituting 96.0%; and 7,000 were non-service inventions, constituting 4.0%. During the first half of 2020, the top 3 domestic enterprises with the most granted patents (not including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) were Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (2772), OPPO Guangdong Mobile Telecommunications Co., Ltd. (1925), and BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. (1432).

By the end of June 2020, the cumulative number of domestic invention patents (not including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) was 1.996 million, with the number of invention patents per 10,000 population reaching 14.3.  During the first six months of 2020, the top 3 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) with invention patents per 10,000 population were: Beijing (141.5), Shanghai (56.1), and Jiangsu (31.9).

During the first half of 2020, CNIPA accepted a total of 29,500 PCT international patent applications, with a year-on-year increase of 22.6%. Among them, 26,800 were domestic applicants and 2,700 were foreign applicants.  During the first half of the year, the top 3 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in terms of the number of PCT international patent application acceptance were: Guangdong (10,900), Beijing (3,800), and Jiangsu (3,300).  A total of 26,200 patent reexaminations were accepted while 25,700 cases were closed. 2,600 patent invalidation declaration requests were accepted; 4,300 cases were closed. The duration of prosecution for China’s patent applications was 20.3 months, whereas that of high-value patents was 15.2 months, and 6.4 months for utility models, and 3.2 months for design.

When it comes to trademarks, during the first half of 2020, 4.284 million trademark applications were filed and 2.629 million trademarks were registered in China.  By the end of June 2020, 27.414 million registered trademarks had been valid.  A total of 3,875 Madrid international registration of trademark applications were received from Chinese applicants, growing by 36.0% on a year-over-year basis.  By the end of June 2020, valid registrations of Madrid international registration of trademarks applied by Chinese applicants had numbered 41,000. During the first half of 2020, 166,000 applications for various types of trademark review and adjudications were received and 192,000 cases were closed. The average prosecution period for trademark registrations has consistently fallen within 4.5 months.      

In terms of geographical indications: during the first half of 2020, CNIPA approved 322 enterprises using special signs for geographical indication products and registered 364 geographical indication trademarks. By the end of June 2020, a total of 2,385 geographical indication products and 8,811 enterprises using special signs had been approved, with a total of 5,682 geographical indication trademarks being registered.

For layout designs: during the first half of 2020, 5,176 applied for layout design registrations in China, which represented a 78.2% growth on a year-over-year basis. 5,262 were issued certificates, increasing by 111.6% compared to the previous year.

Finally, for intellectual property protection and application: during the first half of 2020, there were a total of 5,320 administrative patent infringement disputes across China (autonomous regions and municipalities).  The national patent and trademark pledge was 85.3 billion yuan, which represented a 45% growth on a year-over-year basis.  In addition, the number of pledge projects was 4,678, with a year-on-year increase of 52%.  Among them, patent pledges amounted to 65.1 billion yuan, with a year-on-year increase of 61%.  The number of pledged projects was 4,171, with a year-on-year increase of 54%; the total amount of trademark pledges was 20.2 billion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 8.8%, and the number of pledged projects was 507, with a year-on-year growth of 34%.
