CNIPA Releases 2022 Data (January 2023)

On January 16, 2023, Information Office of the State Council held a press conference to introduce the work related to intellectual property rights in 2022 and released the 2022 statistics of China's patents, trademarks, geographical indications and integrated circuit layout designs.

In 2022, in total there are 798,000 invention patent applications getting granted; a total of 2,804,000 utility models have got granted; and 721,000 designs have got granted. There are 74,000 international patent applications accepted under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). 1,286 applications for international registration of designs have been filed by Chinese applicants through the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs.

By the end of 2022, the number of invention patents in force is 4.212 million, of which 3.280 million domestic (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) inventions are in force.  Throughout the year 2022, 63,000 patent reexamination cases and 7,900 Declaration of Invalidation cases have been closed.

In 2022, there are 6.177 million trademarks approved for registration. 5,827 applications for international registration of Madrid trademarks have been received from domestic China applicants who filed the international registration based on the Madrid Agreement. 169,000 trademark opposition cases have been adjudicated. The trial of 412, 000 cases of various trademark appraisal cases have been completed. By the end of 2022, the number of effective trademark registrations in China is 42.672 million.  

Throughout the year 2022, there are 5 approvals for the protection of geographical products of geographical indications; 6,373 market entities approved to use the special marks of the geographical indications, and 514 geographical indications registered as collective marks and certification marks.  

There are 9,106 integrated circuit layout designs registered and issued. By the end of 2022, a cumulative total of 61,000 integrated circuit layout designs certificates were issued in China.

In 2022, 58,000 administrative cases of patent infringement disputes have been handled; 71,000 applications for aid in legal rights protection have been handled, and 88,000 mediation cases of disputes have been accepted. In 2022, there are 28,000 patent and trademark pledge financing projects. The total amount of pledge financing is 486.88 billion RMB, an increase of over 40% to the last year.
