The CNIPA Released Intellectual Property Data from January to June (July 2021)

The CNIPA centrally released semi-annual statistical data on patents, trademarks, geographical indications and integrated circuit layout designs, as follows.

(I) Patents  

In the first half of the year, 339,000 invention patents were authorized.  By the end of June 2021, the effective number of invention patents was 3.324 million, of which the effective number of domestic (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) invention patents was 2.454 million, a year-on-year increase of 23.0%.  33,300 PCT international patent applications were accepted, with a year-on-year increase of 12.6%.

In the first half of the year, 1,327,000 utility model patents and 393,000 design patents were authorized. 28,400 patent reexamination cases and 4,300 invalidation cases were closed. Foreign applicants authorized 54,000 invention patents in China, constituting a year-on-year increase of 30.0%.

(II) Trademarks  

In the first half of the year, 3.724 million trademarks were registered.  By the end of June 2021, the number of effective registered trademarks was 33.548 million, a year-on-year increase of 22.4%. 2954 applications for Madrid international trademark registration were received.  Foreign applicants registered 90,000 trademarks in China, a year-on-year increase of 7.5%.

In the first half of the year, the CNIPA completed the examination of 82,000 trademark objection cases and 188,000 trademark review cases.

(III) Geographical Indications

In the first half of the year, the CNIPA recognized 87 geographical indication protection products, approved 254 geographical indications to be registered as collective trademarks, certification trademarks and 3,355 market entities to use special geographical indications. As of June 2021, 2,478 geographical indication protection products have been identified, 6,339 geographical indications have been approved to be registered as collective trademarks and certification trademarks, and 12,789 market entities have been approved to use special geographical indications.

(IV) Integrated Circuit Layout Designs

In the first half of the year, 7,629 integrated circuit layout designs were registered and issued, maintaining a rapid growth.

(V) Protection and Application of Intellectual Property

In the first half of the year, 13,800 administrative adjudication cases of patent infringement disputes were filed in all provinces (regions and cities) across the country.  The national patent and trademark pledge financing amount was 107.4 billion yuan, with a year-on-year increase of 25.9%; the number of pledged projects was 6,195, with a year-on-year increase of 32.4%.

Among them, the financing amount of patent pledge was 86.2 billion yuan, representing a year-on-year increase of 32.4%. The number of pledge projects was 5497, with a year-on-year increase of 31.8%. The financing amount of trademark pledge was 21.2 billion yuan, with a year-on-year increase of 5.0%, and the number of pledge projects was 698, with a year-on-year increase of 37.7%.
